Meet the Board

Coastal Adaptive Sports is run by a small board of directors. The board meets monthly to plan events, discuss funds, and keep the nonprofit running smoothly. No board member receives or ever will receive a salary for this.

Brock Johnson, President

Adaptive Sports have always been a passion of mine. When I had my accident eight years ago, leaving me a quadriplegic, I assumed participating in any of my passions was over. I definitely couldn't have imagined how wrong I was! Not until I found CAS did my life change for the better. I began as a participant loving being able to to get involved in all types of sports, especially two of my favorite sports in surfing and basketball. I soon became a board member and began our surfing program, Wheel to Surf, which is the most joyous thing I've ever been apart of.Now as the President, I have to say, I definitely never imagined being able to reach as many lives locally, across the country, and internationally as we have. It fills my heart to see the happiness in our participants and their families, and has shown me what my true purpose is in life. It can be said now that sports literally saved my life, and in turn has inspired me to devote myself to helping those in need to find that joy as well. It's beautiful thing to see and be a part of, and I'm extremely grateful to all of those that make it happen.

Jesse Lind, Vice President

I'm a proud USMC veteran and St. Bonaventure graduate. My life took a turn after a motor vehicle accident left me with a spinal cord injury. However, my journey toward resilience and passion began when I discovered adaptive sports at the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in 2014. I instantly fell in love with wheelchair basketball and embraced it wholeheartedly, dedicating the past seven years to playing this sport, along with wheelchair softball and wheelchair rugby league. In 2018, I became a board member of Coastal Adaptive Sports, eventually taking over the basketball program and helping create the Coastal Chairmen wheelchair basketball team in 2019. Today, I proudly serve as the player/coach, and our program has grown to be highly competitive. Adaptive sports have been transformative for me on a personal level. They've provided me with a renewed focus, offering something I do just for myself and eagerly anticipate each week. The camaraderie within the adaptive sports community is nothing short of amazing, and I've forged enduring friendships throughout this journey. My involvement has evolved into a profound passion, and I relish the opportunity to introduce others to the life-changing world of adaptive sports.

Bill Johnstone

Director of Wheelchair Basketball

In 1993 late October at work, a piece of a metal hammer that broke off, penetrated my right eye, and caused me permanent vision loss and glaucoma.
3 months later, in early December I was in a severe automobile accident which I obtained severe trauma to my right leg which they had to amputate above the knee. The right side of my face was also severely impacted from the accident where I broke 85% of my bones on the right side which I ended up with having metal plates put in holding my eye socket and lower jawbone. Also, from the impact I had to have my spleen, lever and small intestine repaired. I have had three major back surgeries and have had 7 mm of my right collarbone removed and I had my bicep and rotator cuff repaired on the right shoulder by almost tearing the bicep off.
What wheelchair basketball mean to me:
Playing wheelchair basketball for me means a lot playing with the coastal chairman as in being a blessing and a great opportunity. Just being part of a team has helped me by keeping my mind body and spirit healthy. Playing wheelchair basketball brings new friends and teammates into your life which helps you see that you are not the only one in the world with the only disability. Because of having all different adapted Sports gives everyone with a different disability to be able to participate in a sport that they like
